Every year, 11 May is celebrated as National Technology Day across the country to celebrate the technological innovations done by different scientists, engineers, etc. This day also commemorates India’s scientific advancement and considered as a symbol of pursuit for technological creativity, scientific inquiry, and the conversion of that pursuit in the integration of society, industry, and science.
The day is much more than the anniversary of a historical event. As technology is a pathway to the future. Today we celebrate the achievements of our best scientists and innovators, and their success in shaping technology into usable, commercial products and processes that transformed the lives of people.
National Technology Day highlights the important role of Science in our daily lives and encourages students to study and take Science as a career option. This day, different kinds of events are organized in technical institutes and engineering colleges to mark the important happenings and developments. Competitions, quizzes, lectures, interactive sessions and presentations of different aspects of Science are presented globally. This day is very important for engineers, planners, scientists and others who are engaged in nation building and governance. Government organize program and organizations and individual are granted with National Technology Awards for receiving new advancements by the leader of India. The service of science and innovation organize distinctive occasions.
The National Technology Day is observed to memorialize different technical success; some of them are given below:
- Pokhran Nuclear Test– In 11th May 1998, the nuclear test happened in Pokhran. It was a proud full matter for all the citizens of India. On the 11th and the 13th of May in 1998, India conducted five nuclear tests at Pokhran, Rajasthan. On 11th May, the first five tests were conducted when three nuclear bombs were exploded while recording an earthquake of 5.3 Richter scale in the nearby seismic stations. On 13th May, rest two tests were carried out.
- Part of Nuclear Club– After this, the then current Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared India a nuclear state, making it the sixth country in the world to join the ‘nuclear club’ of nations and the first one that was not a party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
- Hans-3 Tested- Apart from this, 11 May is also memorable when the country’s first indigenous aircraft, the Hansa-3, was flown in Bengaluru while the nuclear tests were being conducted in Rajasthan. It was developed by the National Aerospace Laboratories, a Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) lab. Hansa-3 was a light two-seater general aviation plane. This plane was used in flying institutes for pilot training, aerial photography, sports, surveillance, and environment-related projects.
- Trishul Missile– Additionally, India also conducted a successful test firing of Trishul missile on May 11, 1998. After this test firing, Trishul missile was inducted into service by the Indian Army and Indian Airforce. Trishul was a part of India’s Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme of India that has played role in the formation of Prithvi, Akash and Agni missile systems. Trishul is a short-range, quick-reaction, surface-to-air (SAM) missile.
Based on these immense breakthrough accomplishments and outstanding innovations by the engineers, scientists, and technicians of the country, the prime minister of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee announced 11th May as the National Technology Day and since then National Technology Day is celebrated every year in the entire country.
