Your Brand Isn’t in AI Answers: Follow These Three Steps to Fix It

You followed all the best marketing strategies, but when a customer is looking for the best product in your category, your brand doesn’t appear. Why?

Because your web page does not include enough signals that AI looks for before suggesting any brand. Today, customers mostly use ChatGPT and Gemini for AI-generated responses. And these platforms do not produce a list of blue links.

According to a recent study by EMARKETER and Bazaarvoice, 83% of consumers currently use AI. However, 56% of people trust it with product recommendations. AI is already the first filter that separates your brand from a purchase for over half of consumers.

The click is no longer relevant in the competition. Now, what counts is whether your product turns into the solution that AI provides. You won’t be considered if your content isn’t organized in a way that these systems can locate, understand, and rely on. So, how to make AI suggest your brand name and description?

1. Assess Your Current AI Visibility

You need to create a baseline before making any changes. With a spreadsheet and a few hours of manual testing, you can easily create one. There are two important measurements:

Citation rate: The percentage of prompts in which your domain appears as a source is known as the citation rate. Your brand may or may not be mentioned, but your website is mentioned. This is a significant metric that matters to your marketing team; it’s the AI version of Share of Voice.

Share of Model (SoM): The Share of Model (SoM) is the frequency with which your brand is mentioned or acknowledged in AI responses to the questions that are important to your customers. It is the AEO counterpart of paid search’s Share of Voice.

Conduct the Initial Audit of AI Visibility:

  • Create a list of 20 to 30 questions that accurately represent the way your customers actually look up your industry. “What are the best [category] tools for enterprise?” is an example of a question format. “How do I [problem your product solves]?” “Compare [your category] vendors.”
  • Record the result in a spreadsheet with columns for engine, prompt, brand mentions (Y/N), domain citations (Y/N), and mentions of competitors.
  • Find your initial engine-specific mention rate (mentions/total prompts) and citation rate (citations/total prompts).

Consider repeating this audit every month. The leading indicator of the impact of your content change is the difference between months.

2. Fix the Content Structure for AI Extraction

AI engines do not read your work as people do. They are looking for content that can be taken out of context and still make sense, address a topic, and reference reliable sources. You can increase your citation rate by making three structural changes to your current material, none of which call for a complete content redesign.

Change 1: Provide a direct response at the beginning of each section.

AI engines prioritize the initial sentences of each piece of content. The engine frequently ignores your context-setting introduction (“In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape…”) in favor of a competitor’s more direct opening.

The conclusion should be stated at the beginning of each section. Making changes in the content structure can significantly enhance the AI citation rate.

Change 2: Add citations and statistics to increase AI visibility.

Adding citations increased AI visibility by up to 115% for lower-ranked websites, or those outside the top places in traditional search. It follows that smaller or more recent brands stand to benefit more from structural enhancements than do more established domains.

Instead of saying “personalization improves engagement,” say “personalization improved email open rates by 26%, according to Campaign Monitor’s email benchmarks.”

Change 3: Refresh stale content systematically.

AI algorithms use freshness as a ranking indication. Give your best-performing pages, which already have some authority and structure, high priority. Then, update them with new information, examples, and a corrected publication date. At least once every two months, try to update high-priority pages.

A word about content type: brand mentions for comparison material are 2.4 times higher than those for instructional content. 42.8% of the time, brand references come from how-to articles. Changing to comparative guides and organized how-to material will increase your mention rate if the majority of your content is definitional or explanatory.

3.  Build Third-Party Authority

Once you are done with the content structuring, focus on building third-party authority.

It’s not a peculiarity that third-party sources have an advantage over your own domain; rather, it’s a reflection of how AI engines develop their comprehension of your brand. They compile data from all over the internet, including what trade journals say about you, whether analysts reference you, and how communities talk about your product category. One of the various inputs is your own material.

Finally, once you implement these changes, within four to eight weeks. AI engines re-crawl and re-index your new pages; content structure improvements such as leading sections with direct replies and adding citations and statistics can be seen in AI citation patterns. Building third-party authority takes three to six months of continuous earned media engagement.
