Renowned as one of India’s most distinguished scientists, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam played a notable role in India’s defense and space research development. His role was majorly in the development of India’s Agni and Prithvi missiles, which made two strides in the defense capability. He was the former President of India and was known for inspiring people worldwide, whether it was through his career in science or politics. Besides, his soft-spoken nature, intelligent mind, and determination to work for the upliftment of the people won him thousands of admirers. India lost this great scientist and leader on July 27, 2015; he was addressing the students at IIM Shillong when he suffered from a cardiac arrest. This year, we will observe the 10th death anniversary of Dr. Kalam, also known as Missile Man.
Early Life and Journey
Born on October 15, 1931, in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, Dr. Kalam’s life journey has been full of challenges and hardships, but he never gave up. He did his schooling at the Schwartz Higher Secondary School. Then, he did his graduation at St. Joseph’s College. After graduation, Dr. Kalam acquired a degree in aeronautical engineering from the Madras Institute of Technology.
Despite humble beginnings, his passion for learning propelled him to study at Schwartz Higher Secondary School. Dr. Kalam went to St. Joseph’s College for his graduation in physics. It’s said that he would study hours without a break and be focused, especially on mathematics. Following his graduation, Dr. Kalam acquired a degree in aeronautical engineering from the Madras Institute of Technology and started a progressing career in science and public service.
In the year 2002, Dr. Kalam was selected as the President of India by the then-ruling party, BJP, and supported by the opposition Indian National Congress (INC). Dr. Kalam was the 11th President of India. He served from 2002 to 2007. Additionally, he created a notable impact through his writings as well. His books, “Wings of Fire” and “Ignited Minds”, empower thousands of people to dream and strive for the country’s development. This is the reason Dr. Kalam has become an inspiration for future generations.
For his great efforts and initiatives, Dr. Kalam has been honored with numerous prestigious awards like the Bharat Ratna, the Padma Vibhushan, and the Padma Bhushan. He also received the Hoover Medal, the King Charles II Medal, and many other global-level honors. These achievements perfectly demonstrated Dr. Kalam’s dedication to the welfare of society.
