PM Narendra Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping before the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Tianjin. The interaction came at a time when India’s relations with the US do not seem fine due to Trump’s recent trade and tariff policies.
During the meeting, the Chinese president mentioned that it is beneficial for both nations to be friends, quoting it as “the elephant and dragon should dance together.”
PM Modi said that an agreement has been reached between the special representatives for border management. Kailash Mansarovar Yatra has been restarted. Direct flights have resumed between the two countries. PM Modi further emphasized that cooperation between the two nations will open the path to the welfare of all humanity.
Both leaders held wide-ranging talks focused on rebuilding the bilateral association that has been affected due to the four-year standoff in eastern Ladakh that ended last year.
Further, the Chinese president said this year marks the 75th anniversary of the China-India diplomatic relationship. And both nations should handle their relationship from a strategic and long-term view.
Additionally, PM Modi met Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu on the sidelines of the SCO summit. Sharing on X, he shared, “Just started with President Muizzu.” The development cooperation of India with the Maldives is beneficial for the common people.
The SCO summit holds major importance for India following the US’s tariff imposition of 50%, including a 25% levy, particularly targeting India’s purchase of Russian crude oil.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) came into existence in 2001 in Shanghai with six founding members. Later, it grew and became a group of 26 nations, including 10 full members, two observer states, and 14 dialogue partners in Asia, Europe, and Africa.
With major developing nations as members, like Russia, India, and China, SCO currently stands with almost half of the world’s population and around one-quarter of the world’s economic growth.
