Katie Lau: Ever Passionate Leader Steering Entrance to Deliver Excellent Aesthetic Medical Services

Women are making their mark in a different industry. From the world’s pool of fearless beauties with the brain, Prime View Magazine covered one such gem. She is Katie Lau, the founder of Dr. Katie Clinic, providing aesthetic medical services in Hong Kong.

Dr. Katie Clinic focuses on treating patients in a holistic approach, not only addressing patients’ concerns – a very common business model in the industry – but providing an all-rounded solution to improve patients’ skin health and outlook through non-invasive treatment modalities.

In academics, Katie did her graduation from the University of Hong Kong in 2006, then completed 3 years of basic surgical training in 2011. After that, over the last 10 years, she went into private practice specializing in aesthetic medicine. In the year 2017, she started her clinic.

Apart from her academic commitments, Katie was also a competitive swimmer, where she started training back at the age of 8. With luck, she managed to uphold the 100 meters Butterfly Hong Kong Record Holder title for 9 years from the year 1993, attained World Ranking number 16 with the same in that year too, the first swimmer in Hong Kong to have accomplished a World Ranking. The following year, she was part of the 4 x 100 meters Freestyle Relay silver medallist team in the Hiroshima Asian Games 1994.

The Motivation Behind The Inspiring Journey

While talking about her early days, Katie said, “My childhood path has never led me into daring dreams of becoming a doctor, despite unconditionally feeling passion in my current healthcare mission once I obtained qualifications. I majored science stream in high school, as chemistry and biology subjects contribute a good basic foundation, my family and teachers strongly encouraged me to aim for medical school. Also, both my parents’ families have no precedence in serving this field, they find it meaningful to go for a try. I was not at all aware that decision was such life-changing and exciting to me.”

“All Hong Kong practitioners are regulated under the Hong Kong Medical Council; all forms of marketing promotions are strictly prohibited. I can only rely on word of mouth to build my reputation all along. Some patients from various centers I worked at before the establishment of my clinic, found me again on the Internet. They were happy to share my joy of taking up a new role. Those surprise moments deeply touched and enlightened me, not only because it meant result satisfaction, but also, they showed faith in me”, she further added.

Resolving Dermatological Problems With Holistic Well-Being

Her primary treatment focus is dermatological problems and holistic well-being management. Improve “weaknesses” by appearance and skin health, while elaborate on the unique natural beauty of each and every, together makes a positive impact on their psychological aspects further – these refinements definitely enrich their work, social, and family circles, they gain much more confidence in walking on their lives.

Encouragingly, not only do Katie’s patients feel revived, people around them – family, friends, colleagues all witness these “subtle” changes, even spiritually. Out of surprise and curiosity, they initiate to ask her patients’ stories, which turn into her “referrals” quite naturally!!

Once her patient, a friend for life!! Loyalty simply grows from outcome efficacy, efficiency, and longevity -meaning to give the optimal with the best products, in the shortest interval, but with the longest-lasting time!

More About Aesthetic Medicine

Aesthetic medicine is a distinct medical industry with great variety. It can be perceived as half art half science, different doctors can exhibit diverse approaches, while the service experience of each patient in every clinic is exclusive and individualized. Therefore, it is common for patients to window shop, and try several centers simultaneously. Regardless, Katie offers her best every day, learns continuously to undertake the better, emphasizes the first principle of “no harm”, instead of merely business focus.

But all in all, the most important quality is SUPPORT – no matter patients, who might be demoralized from past experiences, be it personal or medical, also to respective peer doctors. She strongly believes in her profession, patient complaints are many a time mutual misunderstanding, misconceptions, discorded styles, resulting in “mismatches”. Without exceptions, she stays neutral to explain facts, provide knowledge, rather than go along with “misinterpretations” and further exacerbate the gaps.

The Roller Coaster Ride Towards Success

“Ever since, I very much enjoy working on daily operations, as well as my professional routines – with an aim to help anyone in need. This is my all-time motto no matter where I work. It has always been my great honor to attain recognition, both from patients and society, because these precious rewards remind me to work
even harder, to achieve excellence and the better always. I was granted several Global Awards from UK, USA
this year. Above all, I was proud to be invited as a speaker for Korea Derma annual meeting in December 2020,
my online lecture presented was “Skin Saving Pearls: Combating What’s Under and Above the Mask”, shared by Katie Lau.

A Day In Leading Lady’s Life

“Discipline is always the key to running a sound business. I take in a chronological life since I decided to train into an elite swimmer at a young age. Up to now, just to share, I wake up at around 8-9 am for some workout
before breakfast. I start work at 11 am until 8-9 pm. Afterwards, it is paperwork time, not until I finish can I return home to rest my day at about 12 am. Although it might seem like a monotonous timetable every day, I feel productive acting in such a rhythm. My favorite hobby is coffee brewing and all its mastership, thanks
to my inspirer. I wish to run another business after retirement, a mini cafe so that I can prolong serving in another way”, Katie asserted when asked about her daily routine.

Future Objectives

Katie’s long-term objective is to boost up her field and make known her ups and downs along the journey. Expansion is not her major intention. In the past few years, she has already voiced in seminars, clinical classes, online conferences, and biography articles. Shortly, she is planning to give more in-depth insights, proficiency, real-life stories, up to interesting patient encounters, via YouTube Channel broadcast.

The Support System

“I think I am always a fortunate girl, because, throughout my sports and medical career, I acquire unveiling full back up from my closest family, all-time caring friends, and schoolmates, to my work seniors, counterparts, and later, my team staff. Not without them, I cannot accomplish and be what I am now” Katie proudly shared.

Word To The Wise

The world is changing, fast and furious, just like any occupation. Modern civilization cultivates a substantial proportion of women to be entrepreneurs. For Katie, patients open up more willingly to express their inner concerns to her as a female. Both genders possess their own strengths. But ultimately, hard work plays the trick. With the recent ongoing Olympic Games in Tokyo, this traditional concept of “no pain, no gain” impresses every audience beyond question. Only by clenching through serious professional training, can athletes win in their respective sports arenas. In the same way, the industrious effort pays off a successful career.

Armstrong Capital & Financial Services, A Comprehensive Investment Solution Provider by Manju Mastakar

If you are disappointed with where you stand today, remember to reflect on how far you have come! Manju Mastakar is leading by example as an inspirational women leader and the brain behind the renowned investment management firm, Armstrong Capital & financial services Pvt. Ltd.

Founder of the incredible business in her own right, Manju navigated her brainchild brand’s success story from a small team of financers to an expert in financial affairs, offering unparalleled services. She started working very early in life, at the age of 19 she took up an internship at a CA firm where she was allowed to do audits of stockbrokers & stock traders. That’s how the leading lady got introduced to the stock markets. Later in early 2000, she worked with reputed stockbrokers as a dealer and advisor recommending stocks to HNI clients. In 2007 she moved to Bangalore from Mumbai and worked with a multinational bank and a wealth management firm. Due to the recession followed by the sub-prime crisis in late 2008, she was laid off, and then she decided to start on her own. That’s how Manju’s Entrepreneurial Journey began.

Further, Manju Mastakar apprised, “The clients that I worked with were left without any Advisor. They became my first clients and encouraged me to stick on. I had a small set up of a home office, I would do my calls and execute market trades. I had very few clients.

I was also carrying at that time so motherhood and entrepreneurship both started at the same time. In 2010 I met up with an Investment banker who gave me the idea that he would fund me and that I should start more professionally. I had 10 years of corporate experience working at various levels in a Securities firm but entrepreneurship in the initial day was different, it was all about – do it yourself and at the minimum cost. Later from 2014, the organisation grew rapidly, we had a good client base and I had more employees to delegate work. After that, I never looked back, all the stories of hardship that I went through summed up into 1 word that’s called struggle.”

 A Glimpse of the Armstrong

The innovative seed of Armstrong was sown in 2010 with a passion for research, a devotion for transparency, and the promise to put the client’s interest first in everything it does. This is Financial planning and a Wealth Management company that brings a comprehensive Investment solution to Individuals and Corporates. Here, the primary focus is on capital preservation while still aiming to provide the clients with a reasonable rate of return to grow capital over the long term.

Armstrong provides goal-based financial planning, portfolio management service, wealth management service, retirement planning for individuals. For corporate institutions, it provides cash flow management and currency hedging services.

Financial Planning – Mutual Fund Advisory – Wealth management – these are the Key offerings. The key differentiator is their Financial Plans, they are comprehensive, and they are the backbone for their Advisory. They keep referring back to their plans and then Advice.

Clientele & Unbreakable Faith

The clientele includes various age groups young couples, mid-age couples with teenage kids, and clients who have come to the far end of their earning years.

Every relationship starts with a financial plan. Manju Mastakar and her team listen to them, they understand their needs, then they draft a financial plan and advice on various corrective steps to be taken. It’s just liked all Doctors check you with their stethoscope, the interpretation and the prescription make the difference. So similarly, investment management has to be experienced to feel the difference. It is a business where one needs to invest a lot of time in earning Faith and Trust

Major Hiccups on the Way

“I was born and brought up in Mumbai and I worked there for almost 10 years, I had a comfortable job. When I got married and relocated to Bangalore- I had no job, I didn’t know the city, the language and most importantly the kind of derivative trading in which I specialized, Bangalore was not a market for that. I had come to Zero – I kept meeting the magical figure ZERO many times in life. I had only knowledge, Skills, and Experience rest all is what I built over a while. After starting my entrepreneur journey in a few months, the seed capital that I had raised had become Zero, so I worked hard without any take home to turn around the cash flows”, said Manju while talking about her major hiccups.

“After a few years some recommendations that we gave failed and a lot of clients were upset and paused dealing with us, our clients had become ZERO. After a few more years when there wasn’t any significant growth, our employees felt that this was not a great company to build our career and they left, and the employees had become Zero. Ten years later we have 700+ clients, 25+ employees, and a good brand name. So, challenges keep coming, learn from them, improve on them and keep moving”, she further added.

The Support System

A lot of new entrepreneurs follow successful people, they listen to their quotes. Manju Mastakar followed the loser – they were many in numbers and she learned a great deal on how & why they failed. Those stories helped her a lot in driving the business through tough times.

A Day in Manju’s Life

The leading lady has divided her day into mainly three parts the 1st part from 9 am to 1 pm is about planning what she is going to do today, 2nd part is to get a hang of what others have been doing managing people, and the 3rd part after 8 pm is learning from other she watches a lot of motivational speech. It’s a revitalised exercise. In her free time, Manju loves to listen to Sufi Bollywood music and my hobbies are doing fashion designing.

A Piece of Advice for Female Entrepreneurs

Try to venture out into something you are good at. You should have some domain experience.

Devote a decade to this dream, start small and be tight fist and lean. Remember the first principle is to survive and then focus on free cash flows. Set up good backups at home. Don’t try to be a superwoman to delegate work.

“We are committed to demonstrating support to our clients and we understand this intuitively, many firms would tend to believe that focusing on the practice areas seems to make sense, however ultimately, you are offering a service to a client and behind that service is a person. Maintaining personal relationships with our clients is key to us understanding their needs. This personal development is imperative to us and yields the best results possible”, she further added.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES AS A LEADER

Christiana Kouppi and the Firm share the same challenges as the majority of companies. The present times are in constant flux and the world is in constant change, obviously, COVID has affected everyone to some degree and the evolving needs of the clients keeps Vrikis & Kouppi LLC on their toes, but the team delight in this and have always prided themselves in their ability to respond to change in an instant.

The trends that the VK team has recognised recently however have centred around the need for faster turnaround times in all deliverables and more challenging working structures, and seeing this early on they have been at the forefront of developments that are effectively allowing them to stay ahead to meet the demands of a more complex, faster changing, inter-connected world.

A DAY IN CHRISTIANA KOUPPI’S LIFE

Christiana shared, “Every morning before I get out of bed, I map out a plan of my day in my head. In the office, I have a coffee meeting with the teams to discuss their plan and priorities for the day and then begin. After work, my favourite part of my evening is hitting a Zumba class. With a day job that is so much dependent on articulation, I find a great release from dancing, I truly believe it is the language for the soul when a person can just completely switch off the left side brain and engage one’s more creative artistic right side, with also the added benefit of being able to squeeze in a workout! As I spend most of my week on the phone or in meetings or in front of a computer, my personal time is spent away from all that, weekends are for the outdoors, preferably with a nice glass of wine and enjoying anything that doesn’t need a plug!”

FUTURE ROADMAP

Vrikis & Kouppi LLC has a determined vision of becoming the leading indigenous law firm in Cyprus by conducting its business in a way that is consistent with their values, where they have something of value to offer, and where their endeavour can make a difference.

The Service Portfolio

“After working with numerous small businesses over the course of my career, one thing is clear: they need HR but oftentimes can’t afford full-time coverage. Whats more, their lack of coverage becomes painfully clear when they are finally ready to grow. I started BuildHR because I wanted HR to be a catalyst for growth, not a barrier.”

Major Hurdles & The Support System

Challenges in business are common, some of the challenges Kelly faces with BuildHR are not unlike those she navigates with her clients. Growth of the business and doing so in the right way, knowing when to hire vs outsource, finances and funding following COVID-19 slowdowns, and even off-boarding clients when they no longer are the right fit for BuildHR’s services.

When asked about her support system, Kelly shared, “My parents are a large part of how I got here today. They have owned several businesses in their careers, so I have been able to go to them with questions when I encounter something I haven’t gone through before.

A Day in Kelly’s Life

Kelly’s day often starts on the family side of things. She wakes up around 6:30 am and begins her day with coffee. Then, she wakes her kids, gets them breakfast, gets them ready for school and drops them off.

By the time she gets back home, she starts her day by checking emails, attending meetings, and working through her to-do list. Every day is different based on her To-Do list. Kelly tends to end her days around 5:30 or 6 depending on meetings. Then she helps make dinner, and bath and bed for the kids. By the time they are down, she takes some time for herself to read or catch up on a TV show, or get back to work if there is a deadline approaching. Kelly tries to go to bed no later than 11 each night.

“Essentially, my days are no different than most people. I am a working mother of two small children, I am a wife, and I am trying to grow a business. I have more than one job at the end of the day, the job of a wife, mother, business partner, and owner. Sometimes I can get a lot done, other days I have a hard time focusing due to children at home or feeling burnt out on a topic and needing to take a step back,” asserted Kelly.

She is even working on a book to be published early 2022, focusing on the intersections of Neuroscience, Anthropology, and the workplace “I don’t want to say the sky’s the Limit, since the real limit is how much I can honestly take on without drowning. But I am feeling excited about being able to grow my offerings in a more foundational way towards people in the workplace and continuing to be a resource for my clients,” the leading lady said.

Milestones

Kelly Loudermilk has had the honor of being on The Most Inclusive HR Influencer List for more than 2 years. She has the continued honor of serving on the FORBES HR Council and HR advisory group with a national benefits brokerage firm for almost 3 years. She has been on several podcasts and enjoyed every aspect of chatting with peers and fellow thought leaders. A Piece of Advice for Female Entrepreneurs

When asked, Kelly says the one piece of advice she would give to others is to not be afraid of small risks. If you can think of the worst-case scenario and still feel comfortable with the outcome, take the risk, it is worth it. And to remember that you will not always win or see success in life. There will be tough days but then to keep reminding yourself- “you are enough, you can get through it, and to remember who you are, what your mission is in life, and to live to that mission as much as you can.” It is okay to have an off day or to lose a client, but you have to keep going.

Kelly’s favorite quote was given to her when she was looking to move to Colorado from Oklahoma as a single mother and scared of what may come. Her mother said, “What is the worst-case scenario?” And in that case, it was moving back to Oklahoma, she continued, “If you can live with the worst-case scenario, then it is worth the risk you are taking.” Kelly said that she loved this advice from her mother because in a lot of cases where she is on the fence or outside her comfort zone, she goes back to what her mother said, and remembers if she can live with it, then it is worth diving in and experiencing

Nicole Mixdorf: Employee turned Entrepreneur, Inspiring People to Live Healthy with Balance by Nature

It was exactly 9 years ago when Nicole Mixdorf, a motivational leader & seasoned professional took the leap into entrepreneurship with her brainchild Balance by Nature, an award-winning Corporate Health & Wellness Consulting Firm. Her vision was to help other busy professionals find more balance in their lives and thrive.

Nicole Mixdorf always wanted to have her own company, as she grew up working in her family’s business. Entrepreneurship is in her blood. She started her career in corporate sales and management while working in the travel industry. Once her dad got sick with cancer, the stress from work and home became too much and eventually made her sick. After taking a leave of absence to heal her body, Nicole realized what an impact a stressful work environment has on the health and well-being of employees, so she set out to change the paradigm. She launched Balance by Nature in 2012 to help companies retain their top talent, increase innovation, and improve health outcomes by implementing wellness programs that allow their staff to show up as their best selves every day.

More about the Balance by Nature

Balance by Nature helps businesses create cultures of health where their employees can thrive and do their best work. It offers inspiring content to support the physical, mental, emotional, social, and financial well-being of employees, which has become even more important due to the intense stress from the global health pandemic.

The team takes a consultative approach in designing engaging wellness solutions for their clients, tailoring the program design to match their needs, interests, and budget. Their programs include elements of mental health, stress reduction, fitness, nutrition, holistic healing, personal development, team building, and leadership coaching. Each wellness program is unique, providing the perfect solution for each company.

Further, Nicole Mixdorf apprised, “Balance by Nature is excited to launch a new Wellness Studio TV channel with a full calendar of live events, video on-demand, and wellness challenges that will make it easy for participants to create healthy habits, no matter where they are located. The weekly schedule of live events include Yoga, Qigong, Bootcamp, HIIT, Pilates, Zumba, Bollyx, Meditation, EFT Tapping, Healthy Cooking Classes, Music Therapy, and our Wellness Speaker’s Series, viewable on our TV apps, mobile apps, or on the web. We are also launching an Apple Watch Fitness app, allowing participants to immerse themselves into our fitness classes in a new way. There will be special monthly events through the channel, including sound baths, group reiki healing sessions, hypnotherapy, and video series for sleep, anxiety, and yoga therapy. We are developing strategic partnerships with corporations, hotels, and other inspiring organizations that are doing great work in this world. The future is bright, and we are excited to enjoy the journey!”

Clientele & Corporate Ethics

The clientele includes organizations that are looking to reduce stress and create a healthier work-life balance for their employees. The company has worked with some amazing brands like Hulu, Accenture, LA Philharmonic, LAX Airport, and Westfield, to name a few.

“Our clients appreciate our innovative approach to wellness, along with our ever-expanding list of wellness experiences to choose from, and our personal touch. We are constantly receiving feedback from employees telling us how happy they are that their employer provides them with such wonderful resources to feel good and bring their best selves to work”, Nicole Mixdorf proudly said.

Fierce in the Face of Challenges

Balance by Nature was launched with an onsite model, where their employees would go onsite to the client’s offices to teach in-person classes to their staff. Once COVID hit and all the employees went to work from home, every single client they had called within a 24hr period to cancel everything. It was a powerful moment as Nicole Mixdorf meditated on the best way forward, instantly receiving the idea to go online. She took the whole company online in a mere 30 days and started live-streaming everything. It turned into a blessing as this new virtual model allowed them to expand their services to remote workers all over the world.

The Support behind the Success

“I am incredibly blessed to have been brought up in a happy and loving home, where my parents helped me to believe in myself and my abilities from an early age. Not everyone is that lucky, so I never take it for granted. I also had some incredible mentors and business coaches along the way that inspired me to think bigger. My husband has been my rock through thick and thin, believing in me, and supporting me when I decided to leave my lucrative corporate career behind to start my own business. Every experience throughout my life has brought me to this point, and I wouldn’t change a thing!”, asserted Nicole Mixdorf.

A Day in Nicole’s Life

While talking about her daily routine, Nicole Mixdorf said, “My morning ritual consists of a gratitude practice, followed by 10 minutes of yoga and 10 minutes of meditation. I repeat positive affirmations in the shower and then listen to an uplifting audiobook or podcast while I get ready. After having a healthy breakfast, I will write down my top 3 goals that I want to accomplish for the day personally and professionally. I block my tasks into my day around my calls and meetings, allowing me to have focused time to work on my projects without distractions. I often schedule one walking meeting each day, where I invite someone to go for a walk at the same time and talk on the phone, rather than hopping on Zoom.”

“At the end of the day, I enjoy playing with my kids and cooking dinner for the family. I designate different activities each night throughout the week so that I can fit in all things that are important to me – nights to watch a show with my hubby, nights to read, nights to take a bath and write in my journal, nights to work on projects, date nights, etc.”, she further added.

Jene Park: A Fashion Entrepreneur, Walking the Untravelled Path to Success with her Brand, Recycled Karma

Jene Park, a passionate, fierce, and customer driven fashion entrepreneur, transitioned these motivation steering words into reality by launching her brainchild brand, Recycled Karma, in the global fashion industry.

Recycled Karma is a vintage and classic rock & roll inspired premium streetwear fashion powerhouse, designed in Los Angeles, California. The company partners with the most sought-after, iconic and instantly recognizable artists that include AC/DC, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Def Leppard, Led Zeppelin, KISS, Blondie, Joan Jett, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, The Black Crows, The Police, Poison, Duran Duran, Wham!, Woodstock and many more. They create products of impeccable quality, and the coolest, most stylish looks, at an affordable price point.

However, just like any other entrepreneur, she too experienced her share of challenges. But she chose to remain unfazed and rather things in her stride. And, despite all the difficulties, everything from learning English to overcoming cultural differences, she achieved the current position of a woman-owned and operated fashion brand by believing in her dreams. Undoubtedly, it was a roller coaster ride but was indeed worth the pain as she is one of the leading fashion entrepreneurs. Jene Park is funny, young at heart, down to earth, accomplished, badass CEO. She was born and raised in South Korea, and later she emigrated to LA at age 29 with dreams of making a life of her own.

Jene’s Biggest Learning from Initial Days“After completing FIDM, I started working for the women’s contemporary fashion powerhouse BCBG, the only company I wanted to work for. I learned the two most important things in my career from the owner of the company, Max Azria: “Hard work and Perseverance”. Don’t ever give up, and no matter what keep pushing and chasing your dreams. Following his advice, when I run into obstacles I know the only way I can overcome them is by truly believing that my dream can come true through dedication, perseverance and hard work”, state the leading lady.

Hurdles on the Way & Clientele

Recycled Karma is a young company, only 3 years old, and during half of that time, they had to overcome a pandemic. Despite that, the company is experiencing massive growth, almost doubling revenue each year. The biggest challenge is managing the cash flow to support the production so they can fulfil the orders, and investing in infrastructures like warehouses and employees. They are lucky to be experiencing tremendous growth even during the pandemic, but the team is definitely going through some growing pains.

Recycled Karma serves a variety of customers from high-end boutiques, speciality chain stores, and department stores as well as direct to consumers through e-com. The fashion industry is super competitive and a brand must offer a product that is unique and desirable. With that mission, they design and make the coolest and highest quality tee-shirts in the fashion industry. The edgy and fashion-driven collections are elevated by speciality washes and a distressed worn look, making them as soft as cashmere and super-luxe. Not only that, with on-time delivery and the best customer service, the company is quickly conquering the market. Over 90% of our customers are repeat customers, wanting the product season after season.

Contributions towards Environment

“The fashion industry is one of the most environmentally damaging industries. I feel the industry leaders must do our part (even if just starting small) to change the way we make and consume our products. That is why my priority has been to create a fashion collection with function and purpose and to help the environment at the same time by giving consumers fashionable but sustainable choices. Our green label tee-shirt is literally made from five recycled water bottles and post-industrial cotton, all of which are sourced domestically here in Los Angeles. My vision is to form a group of like-minded companies and produce a full range of sustainable and green product lines”, Jene shared.

The Successful Journey

While talking about the factors that lead her towards success, Jene says, “All experiences, good or bad got me where I am today. I had my fair share of failures and mistakes throughout my career, some big and many smaller ones. When that happened, I always just get up and try again. I fell 10 times and got up 10 times. There’s no giving up and I am not afraid of failing, it never stopped me from trying. I was lucky enough to have had so many amazing and wonderful people who helped me throughout my career; my partners, customers, bosses and co-workers that I have worked with. Together we learn from each other. I am still learning every day, especially from young people. They do things so much differently than I do and I am fascinated by it and am learning their ways to viewing and solving problems. But among all the wonderful people, there is one person I owe all my success is my husband Steve. I could have never done what I have done without his relentless help and support.”

Recent Milestones
  • The wholesale grew from 200 POS to 2000 POS from 2019 to 2020.
  • Jene Park launched e-com in Jan 2020 and grew sales 30x by Dec 2020.
Advice to the Future Leaders

Working and running a fashion company requires lots of stamina and physical strength to manage the extensive travel schedules and the grueling workload. So eat well, sleep well, stay fit and don’t take anything personally.

What’s Next?

The long-term goal of Recycled Karma Brands is to conquer the world with the best t-shirts in the fashion industry, with a focus on vintage-inspired, impeccable quality, with the coolest design. Currently, they offer products in the US, Canada, France, Germany, Spain and Japan, but starting next year they are going to open up to more international markets targeting 35 to 40 countries by 2025. They are also planning to expand the product line beyond t-shirts and offer an amazing product range to men and kids, and eventually open their own flagship stores in major cities in the US and around the globe.

Charikleia G. Stouka: Most Influential leader in Real Estate

“Global Business Excellence Awards” winner, Charikleia G. Stouka founded “ALMA” Real Estate Hellas in 2001 in Athens, Greece. Over the years, she has built a solid reputation as one of the foremost real estate professionals in the country, delivering world-class personalised services. Most recently, Charikleia G. Stouka Stouka was named “Most Influential leader in Real Estate 2021” – (Greece) at the “Corporate Excellence Awards” 2021, and was the winner in the “Outstanding Public Relations”, “Outstanding Entrepreneur”, and “Outstanding Customer Service Initiative” categories at the “Global Business Awards 2020”. She has appeared in several magazines including “Who’s Who” Women Leaders, “Business Partners”, “CIO Look”, “Corporate Vision”, “Prime View.” She was also featured in the 2019-2020 and 2021 editions of the “Who is Who Women Leaders” compendium of prominent Greek businesswomen and leaders.

From a small operation run out of a corner of her parent’s living room to renown as a leading figure in her field in Greece, Charikleia G. Stouka has made a name for herself by insisting on a handful of key principles: truly customer-centric thinking, outstanding personalised service, and a commitment to lifelong learning and always keeping up-to-date with developments in her field. It’s these principles that have seen Charikleia  and her company, ALMA Real Estate Hellas, win awards, recognition and, most importantly, customer loyalty.
“It’s our international recognition and our way of thinking that separates us from the competition,” points out Stouka, one of just 20 certified Realtors® working in Athens. “For us, the customer always comes first. The real estate market can be intimidating, and our job is to take the stress out of play so that our customers can enjoy the process and make good decisions. When we look back on our careers, we want to know that we have made a difference in people’s lives and in the life of the community.”

She’s a firm believer that dedication to outstanding quality pays off—not only because of all the satisfied customers but also because pushing for excellence builds expertise and knowhow which in turn build confidence which attracts better quality clients.

The ongoing and growing success of Stouka and ALMA Real Estate Hellas often prompt questions about her secret to making it in such a competitive business. The answer, tellingly, focuses on commitment. “My advice to young people starting in the business, in any business, is to always strive to finish what they start before moving on to the next thing, and in the process strive to do it well,” she points out, reiterating the link between effort, results and confidence. “You must always be willing to learn and to take initiative-opportunities are not handed to you; they must be seized! Real estate is a tough business, so you have to have drive and vision and the will to do go above and beyond. You have to stop asking yourself whether you can do something, and just find ways to do it.”

Looking inward to the principles and behaviours that drove her own success, she underlines the importance of always putting the customer front and centre. “Our business is all about building relationships. About acting fast and leading by example. About finding ways to make things happen for people,” Charikleia G. Stouka says. “You have to ask yourself, what kind of difference do you want to make in people’s lives?”

In academics, May holds a Diploma in Sales and Marketing from the Marketing Institute of Singapore and has successfully completed the Operation Management Innovation (OMNI) programmer conducted by A*Star in 2011. She is also a member of the Singapore Institute of Director.

LHT Holdings Limited has been in the timber industry for more than 20 years. Established in 1977, LHT has grown to be a leader in the industry with an annual turnover of more than S$30,000,000 and is also one of the largest manufacturing companies of high-quality wooden pallets, boxes and crates in Singapore.

As part of its ongoing efforts to reduce waste and to protect the precious timber resources of the earth, LHT has established Singapore’s first wood wastes recycling plant equipped with a highly automated system from Germany to produce a series of Technical Wood products. With the high technology involved, the products have the advantage of being consistent in colour, texture and high density. Wood cracks, mould and insect attacks are prevented through a strict process of treatment and drying. The products are therefore ideal for furniture, building material and heavy-duty industrial usage.

Products & Services

A. Technical Wood, an engineered compressed wood made of original tropical hardwood fibres that undergo a high-pressure and high-temperature steaming process. A new wood that substitutes natural wood that is made from wood waste material.

B. The Innovative Process Product Conversion (IPPC) Pallets series is fast gaining a strong foothold in the arena of green products that are designed and produced to reduce carbon footprints. The pest-free pallets provide innovative packaging solutions that help customers reduce waste, thereby contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions.

C. ECR Leasing Pallet; the “Efficient Consumer Response or ECR is a strategy to improve consumer choice, satisfaction and service and at the same, reduce total costs, inventories and physical assets. ECR requires distributors and suppliers to focus jointly on the efficiency of the total grocery chain, rather than the efficiency of individual components”. D. Industrial Packing; by providing services and solutions to customer with large machinery, unique design shape that requires special care and the packaging that starts from a commercial sales point and arrives at the consumer as a sales unit, that is used to deliver goods from producer to consumer.

“We are always conscious of our role in the
conservation of natural resources”

E. RFID Technology; As a pioneer in RFID technology since 2006, the RFID pallets were mainly used on RFID ASRS warehouses and our own ECR pallet leasing. RFID is a technology tool and it’s not meant to eliminate or replace anyone. It creates a convenient and better job environment. It enhances your productivity by eliminating all unnecessary manpower wastage on information retrieval for customer’s verification documentation, providing accuracy, control and efficiency for your business. Enhance efficiency for right goods delivery to the right location, right condition, right customers and the right time.

F. Our green journey in recycling wood waste to Technical Wood and waste management. Technical Wood is the raw material and bio-products that used to make into furniture component for Greenflo Doors (fire-rated) and flooring strip.

G. Wood Plastic composite (WPC) is our new area in R&D that uses wood wastes and plastic wastes in combination to form or develop more greener products.

Daily Routine & Hobbies

“I usually wake up at 6.00 am to go for a neighbourhood breeze walk for an hour, after that I start my daily routine talking and playing with my two lovely pets. On week day I sleep early at about 12.00am, if it is weekend I sleep around 1 to 2 am. My hobbies are keeping pets, and gardening. I also love browsing YouTube to view certain positive thinking topics and brainstorming human behavior”, said May Yap.

Clientele & Hurdles on the Way

The 500 fortune companies or organisations in the Petrol Chemical, Pharmaceutical , Logistic /Supply Chain Management, warehouses, Electronics and Clean Tech sector are the key customers.

As a traditional wood pallet manufacturer, May Yap saw little changes in the timber industry over the years. But today the world has changed to Digital Technology Transformation where “pen & rulers” will be phasing out. At LHT, they face many challenges. Besides innovative products, they are facing new generation gaps where it is hard to find workers and staff entering timber trade. Fortunately, the government provides funds to cope with digital transformation. They took the opportunities to collaborate with A’STAR since 2009 – The Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) is a catalyst, enabler and convenor of significant research initiatives among the research community in Singapore and beyond.

The collaborated projects with ASTAR results proved of concept ensure the business ability towards long term products that transformed the market using a lower carbon footprint processed wood that was made from waste wood materials.

In 2018, LHT was awarded Climate Action Champion and EcoFriend Awards by NEA.

The use of this technology lowers waste disposal cost by a few hundred thousand dollars, saves 4,500 trees.

Corporate Social Responsibility

May Yap said, “We are always conscious of our role in the conservation of natural resources. Recycling is one of many efforts that reflect our commitment towards mitigating climate change and deforestation”.

LHT was established in 1977 and since then it has grown to be a leader in the industry. May Yap is the Chairwoman, CEO and Managing Director of the company and is taking it towards success.

Jade Clinics : Offering Top Quality Treatments in the Beauty Industry

What started as a single operator electrolysis clinic is now disrupting the franchising service industry. With a mission to end the torment of unwanted hair and leave the client feeling thrilled, Jade Clinics was incepted.

Jennifer Desloges founded Jade Clinics in 1989 as a single operator electrolysis clinic called Allard Studios in Chilliwack, British Columbia. At the time, it was run out of her home carport that had been converted into a
clinic. After moving to Edmonton, Alberta in 1996, Jennifer opened a government approved Electrolysis vocational school. She trained nearly 100 practitioners over ten years, many of whom are still practicing across Canada. In 2006, Jennifer moved back to British Columbia and opened Jade Clinics in Vanco uver’s
trendy Kitsilano neighbourhood. With Jennifer’s daughter Janine Jost ultimately opening the 2nd location in Langley. During one of Jennifer’s many 12-hour workdays the idea of franchising was born. She would spend the next several years diligently researching the world of franchising and making industry connections. Today, Jade Clinics offers more than just electrolysis hair removal services. With new offerings like body sculpting and skin rejuvenation services, Jade Clinics is disrupting the franchising service industry.

Let’s find out how Jade Clinics has made its way to be known as Canada’s most reliable and trusted hair removal, body sculpting, and skin rejuvenation providers, in an exclusive interview between The Franchise Universe and Jennifer Desloges.

Tell us about the vision and core values of Jade Clinics?

Our vision is to have a clinic in every city across Canada, so that every Canadian can have access to a life without unwanted hair.

Core Values
  • We value every client relationship.
  • To be honest and have integrity in EVERYTHING we do.
  • To educate the client thus providing comfort and clear expectations.
Since when have you been offering franchises to partners? What motivated you start franchising your company’s services/solutions?

Jade Clinics first franchisee partner signed in 2010. In the years leading up to 2010, Jennifer’s husband Marcel
had been a franchisee for a large Canadian food chain called M&M Food Market. Together they learnt a lot from the experience which helped push the Jade Clinics business in the franchising direction.

What are the criteria for approving franchisees?

Because we are in the personal service industry, selecting the correct franchisees ultimately comes down to the selecting the right partner to run the franchise location. The partner needs to fully commit to their Jade Clinic location. No previous experience in the electrolysis field is needed and we actually prefer training
partners that have a blank canvas, as our techniques can vary greatly from traditional electrolysis. Also access to capital is always a determining factor to approving franchisees, they need to have as much skin in the game as we do. That’s what we consider a healthy partnership.

How do you ensure that the standard of service is maintained when you offer franchises to your partners?

Training and on-going support are the key drivers to maintaining the standards of service our clients have become accustom too.

Our training program consists of 3-months of practicum work, where we expect 25-hours per week to be
dedicated to perfecting the electrolysis craft. If they are short on these hours, it will be evident at the upcoming training sessions and unfortunately, they will be pushed back to the next class.

Once training has been successfully completed. On-going support continues with monthly check-ins or
as frequent as required. With retesting occurring semi-annually to evaluate skill and progress the partner through our electrolysis levels.

Taking into consideration, the current pandemic, and its impact on global economies, how are you
driving the company to sustain operations and ensuring safety of your associates and employees at the same time?

Our standards of operation and safety have always been of the utmost importance. Because we are working directly on the human body and below the skin, we have always worn masks and gloves and sanitized our stations before and after treatments. Covid-19 obviously has not been easy for anyone, but it did give us the opportunity to better document our operations and safety procedures.

What are your company’s future aspirations? What strategies are you undertaking to achieve those goals?

We plan to award 3 franchises a year till we hit 25 total franchises, at this stage I plan on reinforcing our head office operations by hiring a qualified support team, with the ultimate goal of retiring. I’m looking forward to 2027.

About the Leader:

A self-made entrepreneur, Jennifer has excelled in the beauty industry for over 30 years, specializing in all things electrolysis. Her passion is the client, in everything she does there is a client first mentality. If given a day off (it’s rare), she would be found spending time with her family playing board games at home or at a Vancouver Canucks game with her husband Marcel.

Jade Clinics is an emerging franchise company and as the President, Jennifer’s role is all encompassing. From working in the corporate clinics, to the awarding of franchises and everything in between is taken care by her.
