Truecaller has launched Scam Checker, a new web and Android service that lets users check suspicious phone numbers, links, and messages without downloading the app or signing in. Initially available in India, the service is expected to expand into Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, and Southeast Asia.
The move marks a significant evolution for a company whose identity has been closely tied to caller identification. As scams increasingly move from phone calls to messaging platforms, websites, and malicious links, Truecaller is expanding its technology to follow the threat beyond the phone’s incoming-call screen.
Truecaller’s Scam Checker is built around information Truecaller has accumulated from its large user community. Users can now paste a suspicious phone number, link or message into the service. Truecaller then checks submitted links by expanding shortened URLs, following redirects and comparing the destination against its proprietary risk database and other fraud signals. Suspicious messages can also be analysed to identify phone numbers or links associated with reported scams.
The company says its community-driven ScamFeed contains around 20,000 scam reports in India, with approximately 1,300 new reports added each week.
That creates an important strategic asset.
The expansion also comes at an important moment for Truecaller.
India remains its largest market, with more than 350 million users, but the company’s traditional caller-ID business is facing increasing competition. Telecom operators are introducing network-level caller identification, while Apple and Google are building more caller identification and spam-protection features directly into their operating systems.
Additionally, India’s telecom regulator has added another layer of pressure. TRAI recently required caller-ID and call-management apps that allow users to flag spam calls to share those reports with telecom operators through the industry’s anti-spam infrastructure, which Truecaller has criticised as a “one-way exchange.”
Truecaller has already been expanding into areas such as AI-powered call screening, family protection, premium subscriptions and enterprise services. Scam Checker gives the company another way to extend its technology beyond its traditional application.
