Messi Rewrites History with 18, while Mbappé equals Klose with 16

The 2026 FIFA World Cup was expected to showcase the sport’s biggest names, but few could have predicted how quickly the tournament’s record books would come under siege.

Within the opening weeks of the competition, three of football’s most celebrated stars, Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, and Erling Haaland, have transformed the tournament into a historic chase for goals, milestones, and sporting immortality. What makes the story even more remarkable is that each player represents a different generation of football greatness.

At 38, Messi continues to defy age and expectation. The Argentine legend arrived in North America already regarded as one of the greatest players the game has ever seen, but he has somehow found another level. After opening the tournament with a stunning hat-trick against Algeria, Messi equaled the long-standing World Cup scoring record held by Germany’s Miroslav Klose. Days later, he went one step further, scoring twice against Austria to become the outright leading scorer in men’s World Cup history with 18 goals.

On the other hand, the French captain Mbappé has started the tournament in devastating form, scoring four goals in his first two matches. Those strikes lifted his World Cup tally to 16 goals, matching Klose and moving him within touching distance of Messi’s newly established record.

What makes Mbappé’s numbers particularly impressive is the speed with which he has accumulated them. Still only 27 years old, Mbappé has reached the upper reaches of the World Cup scoring charts far earlier than most of the legends ahead of him. France coach Didier Deschamps has openly backed his star forward to eventually become the tournament’s greatest scorer, believing that Mbappé’s consistency and athleticism could allow him to surpass even Messi’s remarkable mark.

Meanwhile, Norway’s Erling Haaland is making his own statement on football’s biggest stage. Playing in his first World Cup, the prolific striker announced his arrival with a brace against Iraq, immediately demonstrating why he is regarded as one of the world’s most feared finishers. While he remains some distance behind Messi and Mbappé in the all-time rankings, Haaland’s World Cup debut has reinforced the belief that he could become a major force in future tournaments.

The simultaneous brilliance of these three stars has created one of the most compelling individual storylines of the tournament. On a single matchday, Mbappé scored twice, Haaland responded with a brace of his own, and Messi closed the evening with a hat-trick that rewrote history. Moments like those have highlighted the extraordinary level of talent currently on display in international football.

However, the World Cup has been a far more difficult experience for another global icon: Cristiano Ronaldo. At 41, the Portuguese captain arrived at what is likely to be his final World Cup hoping to add one last defining chapter to an extraordinary international career. Instead, his tournament has become a talking point for very different reasons.

Portugal’s opening 1-1 draw against DR Congo reignited questions about Ronaldo’s role in the national team after another poor performance. The veteran forward failed to register a shot on target and extended an unwanted run that has now seen him go ten consecutive major tournament matches for Portugal across World Cups and European Championships without finding the net. During that stretch, he has taken 33 shots but has been unable to break his scoring drought.
