Norway stun Brazil to reach World Cup quarter-finals

Erling Haaland produced a masterclass when it mattered most, scoring twice in the closing stages to help Norway to clinch a stunning 2-1 victory over Brazil and secure the nation’s first-ever FIFA World Cup quarter-final appearance.

The Manchester City striker, who had been kept relatively quiet for much of the contest, came alive in the final 15 minutes to dismantle the five-time world champions. His late brace not only extended Norway’s remarkable World Cup journey but also led to Brazil’s one of the earliest exits in the World Cup since 1990.

Played in sweltering conditions at New York New Jersey Stadium, the Round of 16 clash initially appeared to be tilting in Brazil’s favour. The South Americans were handed a golden opportunity to take an early lead when Kristoffer Ajer brought down Matheus Cunha inside the penalty area after a VAR review confirmed the foul.

However, Brazil failed to capitalize.

Midfielder Bruno Guimarães stepped up from the spot instead of Vinicius Jr., but Norway goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland guessed correctly, diving to his left to produce a superb save that proved to be one of the defining moments of the match. The missed penalty shifted momentum and injected belief into the Norwegian side, who gradually grew into the contest despite facing overwhelming Brazilian support in the stands.

Although Brazil continued to create chances, they struggled to break down Norway’s disciplined defensive setup. Carlo Ancelotti’s men dominated possession for long spells but lacked the cutting edge in front of goal. Teenager Endrick squandered one of Brazil’s best opportunities shortly after coming off the bench, while Nyland continued to frustrate the Brazilian attack with a string of crucial saves.

Norway coach Ståle Solbakken made two key substitutions at half-time, introducing Andreas Schjelderup and Oscar Bobb on the wings. The tactical adjustment transformed Norway’s attacking threat and ultimately changed the course of the match.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 79th minute.

Schjelderup delivered a pinpoint cross into the penalty area, where the towering Haaland rose above Brazil’s defenders to power a header past Alisson. The goal silenced the sea of yellow inside the stadium and handed Norway a lead few had anticipated.

Just 11 minutes later, the duo scored again.

Schjelderup won possession before finding Haaland outside the penalty area. Despite appearing exhausted after an intense evening, the striker unleashed a powerful low drive that beat Alisson and doubled Norway’s advantage, sparking wild celebrations among players and supporters alike. The two-goal performance took Haaland’s tally to seven goals in the tournament, drawing him level with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé in the race for the Golden Boot.

However, Brazil managed to pull one goal back deep into stoppage time after being awarded a second penalty. Veteran forward Neymar calmly converted from the spot, but the goal came too late to alter the outcome. Moments after the final whistle, the 34-year-old was seen leaving the pitch in tears, in what could prove to be his final FIFA World Cup appearance.

Norway will now face the England national football team in the quarter-finals after England defeated the Mexico national football team later on Sunday. Buoyed by their historic triumph over Brazil, Solbakken’s side will head into the last eight believing that an even greater achievement may still be within reach.
